Louisville Orchestra to perform concert with 'surprises' for Fourth of July waterfront celebration

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Back by popular demand: the Louisville Orchestra will be performing for this year's 4th of July celebration on the Louisville waterfront -- and conductor Teddy Abrams says it's going to be wild!

The orchestra will put on a full concert on the Great Lawn under Abrams' direction. It will include patriotic favorites, as well as special guest performances by the local band "Houndmouth" and local singer Callie Day.

It will take place the day before the holiday, on July 3.

About two years ago, the 4th of July event was canceled due to lack of state funding, but officials say sponsors really stepped up to make it happen this year.

The Louisville Orchestra provided the soundtrack for this year's Thunder over Louisville event.

Abrams says the bar is set extremely high, and he has a few surprises that will take the city by storm this holiday.

"One thing that you probably have noticed we've become really proud of is our ability to play music with fireworks," Abrams said. "So if you saw Thunder, of course, you saw the kind of ultimate expression of that -- and we're going to do that again. Unlike last year where the fireworks were following the performance, this year we're going to bring it all together. We are going to play live with fireworks, which is of course a giant thrill, and for all the people who have been asking when they could see something like Thunder again, July 3 is your date."

The concert will also feature two original songs by the #SingfortheCity contest Winners. The event is free and open to the public--and also includes family friendly activities throughout the evening.
