CRAWFORD | Ali to make Sports Illustrated cover for the 40th time

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Muhammad Ali will grace the cover of Sports Illustrated for the 40th time when new editions hit the stands June 8.

Ali passed away in Phoenix on Friday, and is being mourned around the world. His funeral service will take place Wednesday in Louisville.

The SI cover photo was shot by SI photographer Neil Leifer while Ali trained in the 5th Street Gym in Miami Beach on Oct. 9, 1970.

Sports Illustrated also has had a commemorative Ali issue ready to hit the presses for some time.

“Muhammad Ali was a singular force of athletics, humanitarianism and social equality unlike anyone in our history,” SI group editor Paul Fitchenbaum said. “He was a fighter, and a champion, yet many of his most important victories came outside the ring. His legacy defines the very best of who we are and aspire to be.”
