Minor Daniels Academy students strengthen math, science and technology skills in summer camp

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Science, technology, engineering and math are all at the fingertips for some JCPS students.

About 20 middle school students at Minor Daniels Academy have spent the past two weeks using household items including paper, straws, aluminum foil and Dixie cups to build things such as towers and wind-powered vehicles.

"Today, they were working on building a landing pad for some kind of space vehicle...the idea is that when the vehicle hits the pad, it absorbs the shock and doesn't pop the astronauts out of the vehicle," said Rhonda Branch, a counselor at Minor Daniels who also serve as the summer camp director. "And in this case, the astronauts are marshmallows."

Minor Daniels Academy is the one of the district’s alternative schools for students in grades 6-8. Each of the kids participating in the camp will go back to their regular schools this fall.

"These enrichment skills that they get during the summer, they can take those skills back to regular schools, about to learn team-building skills as well and how to give presentations," Branch said.

Students like Shane Logston say they like this kind of learning better…

“It's fun, we've been working on math and science," he said. "I like to be hands on and not just sitting there and listening to a teacher.”

The camp finishes up Thursday with the students presenting a PowerPoint presentation on the projects they’ve worked on and what they have learned.
