LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville Metro Corrections inmate escaped from custody yesterday, according to a news release from the jail.

Authorities say 37-year-old Smith Edward Vance, Jr. was assigned to a kitchen work detail Wednesday when he ran away from the site of a dumpster on the outside of the jail.

Vance was arrested on April 22, on charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Since his escape, a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

"Metro Corrections Director Mark Bolton has ordered an internal investigation into the circumstances that contributed to Inmate Smith's unauthorized departure," said Steve Durham, spokesperson for Louisville Metro Corrections, according to the news release.
