LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- St. Xavier eliminated the state's top-ranked team by beating Greenup County 4-2 in the opening round of the Kentucky State Baseball tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington Thursday night. U of L signee Daniel Fischer struck out five and allowed 4 hits and two runs in going the distance.
Greenup County was ranked 7th in the latest USA Today poll. They finish the year 39-2. The Tigers get West Jessamine in Saturday's quarterfinals at 11 a.m. The Colts beat Bowling Green 6-1.
Bullitt East meets Oldham County in another round of 16 game Friday at 1:30 in Lexington.
In girls State Softball opening round play in Owesnboro, Holy Cross was a 10-4 winner over Anderson County. The Cougars scored 4 runs in the first and 5 in the third in earning their first-ever win in the state tournament. They meet Scott County Friday at 10 a.m.
Male beat top-ranked and defending champion McCracken County 3-1. Olivia Suski allowed six hits and no earned runs a complete-game win and Bayliegh Masterson hit a two-run homer. Male gets North Laurel at 10 a.m. Friday.
