LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An inmate that escaped from Louisville Metro Corrections Wednesday afternoon is back in custody.

Authorities say 37-year-old Smith Edward Vance, Jr. was assigned to a kitchen work detail Wednesday when he ran away from the site of a dumpster outside the jail. He was in jail after being arrested April 22 on charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jail officials confirmed early Friday that Vance is back in custody.

"Metro Corrections Director Mark Bolton has ordered an internal investigation into the circumstances that contributed to Inmate Smith's unauthorized departure," said Steve Durham, spokesperson for Louisville Metro Corrections.
