LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) – And just like that, it was all over.
And for many, their college careers.
With the Louisville Cardinals leading 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth at Jim Patterson Stadium, Junior Zack Burdi gave up a walk off grand-slam to freshman catcher Sam Cohen, giving UC Santa Barbara a stunning 4-3 victory and a trip to their first ever College World Series.
“You know just tip your hat,” said Dan McDonnell after the game. “They had nothing to lose.”
Louisville needed to win Sunday's game after dropping the series opener on Saturday.
Coming into the series, Louisville was the 4-1 favorite to win the College World Series. UCSB was a 100-1 long shot.
Louisville ends the season with a 50-14 record. Instead of heading to Omaha, McDonnell must face a reality that he must say goodbye to many of his players.
Louisville had 8 players selected in the draft last week. The Cardinals will lose three seniors and as many as 7 underclassman who may decide to leave school early for the Pros.
