LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana man was arrested in California yesterday armed with explosive chemicals and guns. Police say he told them he was headed to a gay pride event in Los Angeles. We spoke with some of Jim Howell's neighbors who told us they had no idea how dangerous he was.

People we talked to in James Howell's Jeffersonville neighborhood say they haven't seen him in about a week.

Police say the 20-year-old had an "arsenal of weapons" with him, when he was arrested Sunday in Santa Monica, California, more than 2,000 miles from the Jeffersonville neighborhood where he lives with his parents.

Howell, who attended Ballard High School, but did not graduate, told Los Angeles police he was in the area to "look for a friend" at west Hollywood's gay pride parade. While authorities are still trying to determine Howell's intentions, they found three assault rifles, ammunition, and explosive chemicals in his white Acura.

We spoke to a woman who told us Howell -- who lives next door to her daughter -- slashed her daughter's tires.

"This individual for no reason, did some damage to her vehicle and some other property," said the woman who does not want to be identified. "We didn't realize there was that much danger, potential danger, with one of their neighbors."

Howell has criminal cases in both Indiana and Kentucky.

In October of 2015, Howell was arrested by police in Charlestown, Indiana. He was booked into the Clark county jail on a charge of intimidation. He was also charged with pointing a firearm at someone. That charge was later dismissed.
