LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  Vernon Lanes, the iconic Louisville bowling alley whose future looked questionable last year, has been sold and will be closed for renovations starting today.

Louisville investment firm LEVO Capital, through an affiliate company, paid $775,000 for the building at 1575 Story Avenue in Butchertown in a sale on June 8, according to a Jefferson County deed.

The building dates to 1876, according to Jefferson County PVA records.

“There’s a lot of local nostalgia associated with Vernon, and our goal is to be mindful of the history of the buildings and Butchertown while cleaning up the aesthetic,” said Weston Marcum, CEO of LEVO Capital, in a news release. “Our plan is to keep the vintage feel and we look forward to reopening as soon as renovations are complete.”

The release does not say how long the renovations will take, nor how much the project will cost. Marcum was unavailable for comment Monday, but a spokeswoman confirmed the business will continue as a bowling alley following the improvements.

Atlas Properties, a subsidiary of LEVO, also owns the restaurant Atlantic No. 5 and the Whitestone building downtown, according to the news release.

Scottie Lawler, the club’s longtime assistant manager, “will still be involved with the project moving forward,” according to the release.

Eric Widmayer, the club’s general manager, signed the deed as power of attorney for Robert Dale McCall, sole owner of The Vernon Club LLC.

Vernon Lanes said last year that it would close for good on Oct. 31 as the owners planned a sale of the property, but the business stayed open after the sale fell through.
