$9.5 million renovation to Louisville International Airport right on schedule

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville International Airport is in the middle of multi-million dollar make over. WDRB went inside the construction to get an update on where the project stands.

"It equates to somebody remodeling the inside of their house. You know you can't do that without disruption," said Skip Miller, executive director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority.

And inside the house there is a heck of a lot going on. A fresh coat of paint and all new flooring are just some of the improvements coming to the terminals.

The receipt? A cool $9.5 million.

"Well only having one up escalator and one down escalator, I can imagine that is a real pain," traveler John Kenney said.

When the construction is finished, four new escalators will be taking travelers where they need to go.

"It's a little congested up there, but if it makes the airport better, I am all for it," added Marlon Fulgham.

Work stopped for two weeks during Derby, but all signs point to the entire facelift being finished by late-September or early-October.

Now amidst all the construction, something else is brewing involving a possible name change.

A petition on change.org asks for 1,000 signatures, and as of Tuesday night, they weren't far from that goal.

It calls for Louisville International Airport to be renamed "Muhammad Ali International Airport."

Louisville's airport code would also change from "S-D-F" to "A-L-I".

"Our board hasn't had any conversation about it, and there isn't anything scheduled to be discussed about it at the upcoming meeting," Miller said.

There's another obstacle. The call letters A-L-I are already taken by Alice Springs Airport in Alice, Texas.
