Grave of woman who died in 1881 'completely exhumed' from Harrison County cemetery

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating after someone apparently looted a grave in a Harrison County cemetery.

"Earlier this spring, Indiana Conservation Officers were called to a vast, wooded tract of land in southeastern Harrison County, where a landowner had made a startling discovery," a news release states. "The grave site of Nancy Brown, who died in 1881 at the age of 47, had been completely exhumed."

"The individuals that did this wanted to hike half a mile to get there," said Jim Schreck, and Indiana Conservation Officer.

Both the Indiana Conservation Officers office and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Archaeologists office collected evidence at the site. That evidence was sent to a laboratory for analysis.

"Due to the remote location of the cemetery, an exact timeframe of when the damage occurred is unknown," the news release states.

The Harrison County Public Library Genealogy Department tried to trace Brown's genealogy, but to date, no living relative has been located.

As for the body, the state archaeologist told Schreck there may not have been much left, including the bones.

"That's something that I learned. Being that old, there may not have been much of anything left. If they're going to do this, they've probably done it before and are looking for jewelry or something else."

Anyone with any information on the case is asked to contact the Indiana Conservation Officers' Central Dispatch at (812) 837-9536 or their anonymous tip line at (800)-TIPIDNR.
