Local night club owners increase security before Pride Festival

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -

"The night of the shooting he thought he heard some popping in the music," Micah Mcgowan said.

That popping was the gunman who killed 49 people and injured 53 others at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando.

Mcgowan's friend Axel was bar tending that night.

"The police directed him to push out an air conditioning unit, so they were able to crawl to safety through the air conditioning unit” Mcgowan said.

Mcgowan owns Play Dance Bar in Louisville. He says it's not a time to live in fear, but it is a time to be vigilant.

"Because it is Pride. It's our biggest week of the year," Mcgowan said.

All employees at the dance bar will be trained with an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency. There's an ID scanner at the front door, so everyone who enters can be identified by name.

There are 32 cameras covering all 15,000 square feet of the building.

"We have three panic alarms in the building that at any given time, if they're pushed, the SWAT team will be here. We do have one uniformed Metro Police officer that's always been on duty, and this weekend we will be adding a second,” Mcgowan said.

As for Axel and his co-workers at Pulse, “we've reached out to Axel, and we are hoping to fly Axel and some of the other performers from Orlando here to do a benefit show on Thursday, June 30 here at Play,” Mcgowan said.

Mcgowan's wife Dana is teaching a Buti Yoga class on the Play dance floor at 6:30 p.m. the same day as the benefit.

With your admission to the yoga class, you'll also be able to get into the benefit show at 8 p.m.

All the proceeds from both events will go to the victims of the Orlando shooting.

"Louisville received a 100 percent score from the Human Rights Campaign on the LGBT community and on how inclusive the city is. It's really showed this week.”
