JCPS survey shows waning support for Superintendent Donna Hargens

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools teachers and staff are losing confidence when it comes to the district's leadership and how money is spent.

From safety to administration to job satisfaction the JCPS Comprehensive Survey has been monitoring how parents, teachers, students and staff feel since the mid 1990s.

WDRB News obtained the survey results independently this week after district officials refused to release them, saying the results were in "draft" form until later this summer. However, the survey was quietly uploaded to the district's website late Friday afternoon.

Over a four-year span, favorable numbers for Superintendent Donna Hargens and how money is spent by the district have taken a serious fall.

"Teachers are frustrated," says Brent McKim, president of the Jefferson County Teachers Association. "They don't feel like they are being heard. There's significant concerns about the leadership of the district."

This year's survey was administered during the budget planning process for the 2016-17 year.

From the district's perspective, takeaways from the survey are that JCPS parents are overwhelmingly positive regarding their children’s school and education. The survey also notes that JCPS must improve internal communication across the district, a process that is currently under way. The district will be developing action plans to address other areas of note in the survey.

“We want our employees, parents, and students to know that we value you and appreciate the honest feedback. We will take action based on your responses,” Hargens said in a statement. “We cannot learn how to improve if we do not seek feedback and ask the tough questions. I appreciate respondents' giving us a road map about how we can all work better together to move this district forward.

In this week's Sunday Edition story WDRB reporters Toni  Konz and Chris Sutter dive into the numbers, and reveal what school leaders think about the survey.
