Mitch McConnell speaks with WDRB, calls James Ramsey best U of L president ever

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is one of U of L's most powerful alums and a big fan of President James Ramsey.

McConnell was on campus Friday to promote his new memoir, "The Long Game."

He says Ramsey's long tenure made U of L a better place. In fact, he calls Ramsey the best president U of L has ever had, by far.

But at the same time, he agrees with Gov. Bevin's decision to blow up the board of trustees.

"I do think the governor did the right thing by clearing the board off," McConnell told WDRB News. "It's been a source of dissension and confusion both within the university and out in the community for a couple of years. So I think a fresh starts a good idea. Whether Jim Ramsey needs to be a part of the fresh start, I would like for the new board to consider that."

McConnell says the improvements under Ramsey at U of L have been what he calls, spectacular, despite the university's recent controversies and scandals.

"U of L is dramatically better off for having had Jim Ramsey," McConnell said. "If he does end up leaving, he's already been the best president of U of L in history."

Next week, we'll hear from McConnell again him about that new book, including the story of how his election battle with Alison Lundergan Grimes almost never happened.
