LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - The Providence Pioneers won their first ever state baseball title Saturday in Indianapolis. Providence, making its first appearance in a title game, bested Lafayette Central Catholic 7-6 in the 2A championship.
The game was tied at 6 in the bottom of the seventh when Providence’s Jay Lorenz laid down a squeeze bunt to score the winning run.
Providence finishes the season with a 27-3 record. LCC finishes at 33-2.
The Lanesville Eagles fell 4-0 to Daleville in the Class A final Saturday.
In Lexington, St. Xavier won its second state championship in three years with a 1-0 win over Campbell County Saturday night.
Senior shortstop Casey Simon hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Connor Holden pitched a complete game shutout in the victory. This was St. X’s seventh state championship.
