LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- NASA has unveiled plans for a greener airplane.
The fully electric plane concept is called the X-57 or "Maxwell." The aircraft would have 14 electric motors along the wings.
NASA says Maxwell could be on the runway within four years. The administration hopes to follow that aircraft up with a series of five bigger planes, capable of holding passengers and cargo.
The project is part of NASA's $790 million "New Aviation Horizons" initiative for quieter and cleaner airplanes.
"With the return of piloted X-planes to NASA's research capabilities -- which is a key part of our 10-year-long New Aviation Horizons initiative -- the general aviation-sized X-57 will take the first step in opening a new era of aviation," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.
