CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Clarksville staple Sam's at the Montrose is closed.

"It's always a hard decision. We actually decided to close the restaurant about a week ago, but we were just working on a plan that we started talking about a month ago," said former owner Sam Anderson.

Construction crews moved in Monday to gut the place.

"It happened a lot faster than we thought it would," Anderson said.

Anderson opened this restaurant two years ago after fire destroyed his 30-year-old New Albany tavern, Sam's Food and Spirits.

A month ago, Anderson met with David Lawrence, a fellow restaurateur who showed interest in the Montrose property.

"We've been very fortunate to make an opportunity with Sam to acquire this old, great, historic building, and we're going to convert it over to our Rails Craft Brew and Eatery," said David Lawrence, Rails Craft Brew & Eatery owner.

The renovations will cost about $250,000.

"I agree with all of his changes and the things he's trying to do. He's just a little better and faster at it than I am," Anderson said

Rails will be a casual restaurant offering 24 craft beers on tap and 30 by the bottle.

Another location opened in Seymour a year ago.

Customers can expect a completely new look and different atmosphere, but they will be greeted by familiar faces.

"We are retaining all of the folks that Sam has and working them right into our program along with adding about 25 to 30 employees," Lawrence said.

As for Anderson, he'll remain in the restaurant business focusing on Sam's Food and Spirits in Floyds Knobs.

"We're still open in Floyds Knobs. So it's really not gone, it's more of a move and an opportunity to put something in this building that's going to work for the next 20 years," Anderson said.

Rails Craft Brew & Eatery plans to open on July 18.
