Authorities cracking down on boaters under the influence of alcohol or drugs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Authorities are cracking down on boaters who launch out into the waters while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Police officers, from both sides of the river, will be spending the weekend keeping an eye out for boaters who are drunk or high. "Operation Dry Water" is a nationwide effort to prevent boaters from getting on the water impaired.

In 2014, police say alcohol was the primary factor in one fourth of boater deaths in the U.S.

"Boating under the influence is no different than driving under the influence," said Colonel Jeff Groh of the Clark County Sheriff's Office. "It's the same law, the same regulations, you can be arrested for the same thing."

Since 2009, officers have removed nearly 2,000 people from the country's waterways for boating under the influence.
