LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) –  D'Angelo Russell has some advice for the NBA Rookie Class of 2016.

“A phone will get you in trouble.”

Russell learned that lesson first hand when a video he secretly recorded of Lakerss teammate Nick Young got leaked onto the internet. Russell recently referenced the incident in a new Foot Locker commercial. He again talked about it Friday after playing some pick up basketball at the Kentuckiana Pro Am at Beth Haven.

“I made a statement,” said Russell, a Louisville native. “The damage has been done. I take the heat from it every day.”

Russell said he grew a lot in his rookie season out in LA. From clashes with his teammate to clashes with his coach, it seemed like there was never a dull moment.

“Last year was something I really didn’t expect,” said Russell. “The NBA is real competitive. Going against the top guards every night, you have to be on your toes.”

And there was no rest in practice either. Russell had to go face to face with legend Kobe Bryant.  Russell said he learned a lot from the Laker great in his final season but now he believes he’s ready to really show what he can do.

“Just to be a part of his legacy was a blessing,” said Russell. “Now to play without him, you see how much you have really grown.”
