Coaches take part in Heads Up Football Program's player safety clinic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Making football safer is the mission of the Heads Up Football Program.

Youth football coaches from across the region took part in the program's interactive player safety clinic Saturday at St. Xavier High School.

The clinic covered concepts like concussion awareness, heat and hydration, and how to tackle and block safely.

The coaches will pass the program's lessons on to other coaches, players and parents.

"We love this game. The game's been under attack now for a few years because of the concern over concussions. But I can tell you this much, I don't think there's another sport that's doing more to further progress in the study of the brain and what happens when there are concussions, so I think we're at the forefront of that," said Steve Specht, USA Football master trainer.

The clinic is led by USA Football.
