U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth donates congressional salary to local charities

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U.S. Representative John Yarmuth has donated his 2015 congressional salary to 17 local charities, according to a news release from Yarmuth's office.

Yarmuth's office says the congressman has contributed more than $1 million to the charities since the 2006 campaign, when he pledged to do so annually.

"The increasing severity of our nation's income inequality means our communities must do more to ensure the most basic needs of working families, veterans, and seniors are met," said Yamuth, according to the news release. "Instead of rising to the challenge, the majority in Congress have taken resources away through the sequestrations and other austerity measures. Louisville is lucky to have many wonderful and worthy non-profits doing the vital work necessary to keep our community strong, and I am fortunate to be in a position to support them."

"I can think of no better use of my salary than to help the organizations picking up Congress' slack," Yarmuth added, according to the news release.

Yarmuth's office says he donated various sums to the following 17 organizations:

Center for Women and Families
Commonwealth Fund for KET
Family and Children's Place
Family Scholar House
JCTC Foundation
Jewish Community of Louisville
The Library Foundation
Louisville Fund for the Arts
Louisville Orchestra
Louisville Urban League
Louisville Zoo
Maryhurst, Inc.
Metro United Way, Inc.
Muhammad Ali Center
Planned Parenthood of Indiana & Kentucky
Simmons College
YouthBuild Louisville

"Yarmuth's salary in 2015 was $174,000," the news release states. "He has donated his entire after-tax congressional income to Louisville non-profits during his decade in the U.S. Congress."
