Plans taking shape for Vietnam memorial in Jeffersontown

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new Vietnam memorial is taking shape in the Louisville area to honor the Americans and Vietnamese who lost their lives fighting Communism.

A design competition is being held to find the perfect monument to sit in a Jeffersontown park that's already dedicated to veterans.

A local Vietnamese immigrant came up with the idea for the Tri An Monument, which means "deep gratitude." It's a global competition, with the finalists receiving awards of $4,000 each.

Vietnam veterans expressed their thanks. "We're grateful to be here and it's such an honorable thing. I don't know if it's ever been done before where a country recognizes the military of their home country that fought against the Communist regime and the Americans that fought against them," said Ret. U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Julius Berthold.
