Church honors three strangers murdered in Park DuValle home

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dozens of church members marched Wednesday to honor the lives of three men murdered over the weekend in a Park DuValle neighborhood home.

Interrupting their normal Wednesday night service, members of New Zion Baptist Church marched in a peace walk down Louis Coleman Junior Drive.

They gathered outside the home where Michael Bass, Sr. and his cousins from Baltimore -- Larry Thomas and John Bailey -- were shot and killed Saturday afternoon.

“People in the neighborhood, and even the church, were stunned,” said Pastor A. Russell Awkard.

Members of the church didn’t know the men killed, but they say that’s not important.

“People are important to us. People are important to God. They’re all God’s children,” said Robert Kelcy Jr., a deacon at New Zion Baptist. “Any tragedy that happens amongst them is a tragedy for us.”

To honor the victims, the church held its normal service right outside the home.

Several Metro Council members and the division’s police commander were there as well.

“I have three small kids, and I had to explain to them about how three people were slaughtered like animals in our neighborhood,” said Jessica Green, District 1 councilwoman.

“Our good citizens out here are tired of it, because they can’t come out, they can’t cut their grass, they can’t sit on their porches because of fear of witnessing a crime or being the victim of a crime,” said Major Jimmy Harper, the LMPD second division commander.

At one point, a police chase forced the service out of the street and up onto the sidewalk.

“It was a stark reminder that what’s going on in the community is not unique to the larger west Louisville community,” Pastor Awkard said.

William Mason Jr. is charged with the three murders.

Police say they are still working to determine a motive for the killings.
