Change of plans coming for historic home at the base of the Big Four Bridge in Jeffersonville

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- There are new plans for a historic home near the Big Four Bridge in Jeffersonville.

About two months ago, city officials said they planned to take over the Pearl Street property and turn it into a police substation. That has since changed.

"At the last minute, before we took possession, the owner came in and settled the tax lien, so we would have had to of begin all over again going through the whole process," Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore said.

The future of the home, which is more than 100 years old, is now going in a new direction. Moore says the owners of Market Street Inn Bed and Breakfast are in the process of buying it.

Steve and Carol Stenbro say they plan to turn the place into a cafe.

"They will do a top quality renovation of this," Moore said. "It's going to be spectacular, I'm sure."

It's not the only development happening in the area. According to the mayor, a home right across the street will soon become a pizza parlor.

There's also a hotel going up and apartments. Moore says growth in this area doesn't seem to be slowing down.

"Any vacant property that's in the inventory around the city right now is getting gobbled up, and that's a good thing for us," Moore said.

As for the cafe, the Stenbros tell us they plan to get to work soon after they have ownership. The goal is to have the cafe open by next April.

"That will be great to have a cafe right as soon as you come over the bridge," said Alyson McNeal, a frequent park visitor.

She says the business will be a welcome sight.

"Coming over here, I love the growth and ... it kind of has that old city charm," she said. "I do love that."

Moore says renovating the home would have cost about $300,000. It's another reason he's happy the city didn't end up owning it.
