Indiana could get help in the fight against opioid abuse

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, D.C., (WDRB) -- Indiana could get a major boost in the fight against opioid abuse.

If Congress approves President Obama's more than $1 billion program to address the nationwide problem, the Hoosier state would get about $19 million.

Statistics show that 450 Indiana residents died in 2014 from overdoses of opioids, which include heroin and prescription painkillers.

The CDC estimates opioid overdoses kill 78 Americans every day.

And, according to a research center, Indiana has one of the country's worst shortages of substance abuse specialists.
