University of Louisville faculty group opposes Bevin board shakeup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The University of Louisville Faculty Senate voted Wednesday to issue a statement expressing concerns about Gov. Matt Bevin's abolition and re-creation of the university's Board of Trustees, according to U of L's student newspaper, The Cardinal News.

"We believe that these actions compromise the Board of Trustee’s independence and legally specified balance and may affect the institutional ideal of democratically-shared governance at the University of Louisville," according to a draft of the statement, which was posted to the faculty group's website. "... Faculty members are genuinely concerned that this rushed solution may compromise the independence of the University of Louisville and, as a result, may damage the long-term interests of the university."

The faculty senate is a group of 66 professors representing every school and college at the university.

Last month, Bevin abolished the 20-member Board of Trustees and created a 13-member board in its place. Bevin then appointed 10 new members to the re-worked board, who will join U of L’s faculty, staff and student trustees.

Attorney General Andy Beshear then filed a lawsuit challenging Bevin's authority to remake the board. Beshear has cited the potential effect on the university’s accreditation as a reason a judge should grant his request for a temporary injunction blocking Bevin’s changes.

Beshear's challenge remains pending in Franklin Circuit Court.
