LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Firefighters responded to the scene of a massive fire in downtown Hopkinsville late Wednesday night.

According to Hopkinsville radio station WHOP News, the fire was burning through the Peter Postell at E. 6th Street and S. Virginia Street.

When the Hopkinsville Fire Department got on scene, the building was engulfed and later collapsed.

The building was constructed in the early 1880's - and was named after it's original owner, Peter Postell.

He was a former slave who became one of Kentucky's wealthiest African American businessmen.

There's no word yet on what caused the fire, but no other buildings were damaged.
