LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It would seem that the entire world is playing Pokemon GO.

The wildly popular app has been downloaded more than one million times on Android and Apple devices since its release on Thursday.

If you don't know what Pokemon GO is, don't worry; we've got you. First, let's explain Pokemon:

Pokemon are fictional creatures, similar to animals in the real world. Pokemon trainers, aka humans, catch Pokemon and use them for battle. The franchise began as a pair of video games for the original Game Boy. The franchise ballooned to span across video games, trading cards, animated television shows, movies, comics, and more.

Now, on to Pokemon GO:

The game has players explore real-world neighborhoods.  It uses augmented reality to put Pokemon directly into your personal surroundings.

For example, WDRB Studios on Muhammad Ali Blvd. is the location of a gym. Trainers who make it to Level Five can competitively battle at gyms, but they must be in close, physical proximity.

Since its launch last week, the smartphone app's popularity has skyrocketed, and along with it, Nintendo's shares.

Stocks in Tokyo surged 25% Monday, after jumping 9% on Friday.

The game has not come without controversy. Stories have surfaced about players finding dead bodies, and other horrific circumstances are not difficult to imagine.

However, some players say the game is improving their mental health and well-being by encouraging them to go outside and take a walk.
