LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The longtime principal of Medora Elementary School unexpectedly passed away Sunday after battling cancer.

Betsy Pickup, who has been the principal at Medora since 2008, had only announced her retirement from the district on June 23, stunning many parents and community members.

"She was a great lady who was completely focused on her students and staff," said Linda Duncan, the Jefferson County Board of Education member who represents southwestern Jefferson County. "She was an advocate for her students and was loved by many people. She inspired her staff to operate like a family and that is how the school was run. They are a big family. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her."

Duncan said most people were not aware that Pickup had been sick and battling cancer until she announced her retirement.

"She didn't want anyone to worry about her," Duncan said. "Her focus was completely on the school."

Shortly after Pickup announced her retirement, Glenn Baete, the assistant superintendent who oversees Medora, wrote the following message on the school's website:

Dr. Pickup announced her retirement as the principal of Medora Elementary last week. Dr. Pickup was a dynamic leader who cared about her students and staff and will leave behind a strong legacy for the school. Her presence will be truly missed. When she announced her retirement to me last week, she was adamant that I continue to work with staff to get the school up and running for the upcoming school year.

When a principal vacancy exists, a superintendent’s designee is placed on the School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council to assist with principal selection. I will be serving on the SBDM Council as the superintendent’s designee for the new principal selection, and I will assist the school with staff hiring in the next few weeks. I am working with school staff to have Medora ready for students on Aug.10. I will keep you informed of the process that we will follow to select Medora’s next principal.

Prior to arriving at Medora, Pickup worked at King and Layne elementary schools and Frost Middle School.

Pickup was 62. She is survived by her husband, Randy Pickup, and three sons, Grant Pickup and Cameron Pickup of Atlanta and Austin Pickup of Aurora, Ill.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
