Police officers have always had my absolute support. And the tragic events of the past week have done nothing to change that.
Yes, given the present video evidence, the shootings of the two black men in Louisiana and Minnesota appear to be horrible misuses of police power. We don't have all the facts yet, but if -- after a thorough investigation -- those officers are proven to be as guilty as they seem right now, nothing should stop them from being prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
But yes -- I still support the police. Because the huge majority of them are honorable, brave men and women who form the only barrier we have between civilization and chaos. Remember -- the officers who were gunned down in Dallas were there to protect those protesting against them. And several other officers risked their own lives by throwing marchers to the ground and covering their bodies with their own.
Our problem right now in America isn't one of having too many bad guys. It's that the few bad ones on each side make it all too easy to slide into an "us vs. them" mentality, when the truth is, most of us want to live together in peace.
That's certainly true of the cops. So please don't let them all be tainted by the reprehensible actions of a few.
