LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  Louisville businessman Douglas Cobb has declined Gov. Matt Bevin’s appointment to the University of Louisville Board of Trustees two weeks after local media reported his history of tweets denying evolution and global warming and calling Christianity incompatible with homosexuality.

Cobb was among 10 appointees Bevin named to the newly reconstituted board on June 29, and he initially defended his controversial views before deleting his Twitter account later that day. He has declined to comment since then.

In a two-paragraph letter released by Bevin’s office, Cobb, of Prospect, said he would decline the appointment after “careful consideration.”

In Cobb’s place, Bevin appointed Brian A. Cromer, a Louisville attorney with experience in corporate governance and financial transactions, venture capital and private equity investments, according to the governor’s office.

Bevin’s reworked trustee board – whose legitimacy is a matter of legal dispute – is scheduled to hold its first meeting on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Shortly after Bevin's appointments were announced on June 29, Cobb said by phone that he wasn't going to shy away from the views he had expressed and that he didn't see why there would be any problem with his service on the U of L Board.

“I’m not gonna chicken out and start deleting tweets,” Cobb said that day. However, his account was deleted a few hours later.

Cobb did not answer his phone nor respond to a text and email on Tuesday.
