SET at Theatre Square opens in old 4th Street Cunningham's location

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Welcome to SET at Theatre Square on South Fourth Street.

The Las Vegas inspired restaurant took over Cunningham's location in the heart of the theatre district.

"We want to become that pre-and post-destination for the Mercury Ballroom, for the Louisville Palace and give people a great option to get a cocktail, a cold beer, get a great meal," said Joey Wagner, a partner of SET at Theatre Square.

The new locally-owned upscale restaurant will serve 200 people.

Offering a main dining room, full bar, two private rooms and a DJ booth, where a DJ will spin music every night of the week.

"It gives the customer a different atmosphere that's not really here in Louisville yet," Wagner said.

After eight months of renovations, SET at Theatre Square put a special emphasis on Kentucky themed décor and art pieces inside the venue.

"The painting right behind me was designed by Ron Wolz, hand painted, and it's pretty much everything from Kentucky, from Derby to mint juleps, to Ali, to thoroughbreds, to the Belle of Louisville, to the Ohio River," Wagner said.

The tables, chairs and bars are made out of bourbon barrel wood and old barn wood.

The menu is American inspired with Louisville flare.

"We created a lot of our food with props, like our Slugger Sliders get brought out on a Louisville Slugger wood blank," Wagner said. "Our Knockout Burger gets brought out on a plank with a boxing glove."

"A lot of this stuff with the props is pretty cool. So, everyone's coming in, and they see it walk by, it's monkey see, monkey do. They see it, and they want it," said Executive Chef Geoffrey Heyde.

SET at Theatre Square also decided to keep an old past time on the menu.

"One of the things we got asked a thousand times about this location was are you going to keep the Cunningham's fish sandwich, so we all came in agreement to keep that on the menu," Wagner said.

The SET team hopes Louisvillians will enjoy this big city concept and upbeat vibe.

"I want them to think that's this is a totally outside of the box place for Louisville, but it's still approachable," Heyde said.

"There's so many restaurants that come in with an idea that totally doesn't fit Louisville. This combines a lot of Louisville and Kentucky into the ideas that we brought in from other cities."

"Louisville has turned into one of the best food cities in the country, and we really just wanted to help that and really bring another amazing restaurant that's just going to keep growing Louisville and putting our food scene on the map," Wagner said.

SET at Theatre Square will host opening night July 18.
