LANE | Roberts and Melton Win Golf Titles
An Amateur golf title is determined in Kentucky while Indiana crowns an Open champion.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Owensboro's Andy Roberts shot a final round one-under 69 and won the Clarks Pump and Shop Marathon Kentucky State Amateur by two shots over Denver Haddix, Jr.(68) and Joe Deraney (70), both of Lexington. It was the third straight runner-up finish in the event for Haddix.
Roberts finished with a nine-under 201 total. He added the Amateur title to the Kentucky Open he captured in 2010.
The 101st Indiana Open Championship went to Brett Melton of Washington who fired a sterling seven-under 63 at the Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort to beat third-round leader and defending champion Timothy Hildebrand of Westfield by four shots.
“Today my goal was to go out and get him,” said Melton, the Director of Golf at the CC of Old Vincennes. “Anytime you’re coming from behind, you’re goal is to put the pressure on.”
Melton did so with birdies on the first three holes and he finished with eight birdies and a bogey to claim his second Indiana Open title. He also won in 2008.
"It feels really good,” Melton said. “The first time I win an event is an awesome feeling, but I always think it’s more difficult to win for a second time. This one feels special and I am grateful to have had this opportunity again.”
Melton finished the four-day event at 8-under 272. Hildebrand finished at 276 and was low amateur.
