BATON ROUGE, La. (WDRB) -- CNN reports that the gunman who carried out Sunday morning's shooting has been identified as Gavin Long, 29.

Officials say Long was reportedly killed on his birthday.

The shooting happened Sunday morning at a gas station not far from police headquarters, the Associated Press reports.

Officials say they believe Long was the only shooter, but are unsure whether he had accomplices.

In a press conference Sunday evening, Louisiana Gov. John Bell Edwards said the shooting was an "absolutely unspeakable, heinous attack."

President Obama addressed the nation in a press conference also held Sunday evening, stating these attacks happen far too often, and calls on Americans to avoid divisive rhetoric.

"Attacks on police are an attack on all of us and the rule of law that makes society possible," Obama said.
