Vandals hit Hardin County neighborhood with messages of hate

Posted: Updated:

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- Freeman Meadows is the kind of neighborhood people in Elizabethtown move to and stay in.

"I've lived here for 10 years," one neighbor said.

That's why what happened over the weekend comes as a shock.

"It's kind of scary, and I don't know why people would do such a thing," another neighbor added.

Messages of hate like "Kill police," "Kill Jews," and "Kill Catholics," along with swastikas, were spray-painted on garage doors, cars and sheds.

Nine different spots in the neighborhood were hit between midnight Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday. Oriole Drive took the brunt of it.

One victim, who wanted her identity kept confidential, tried her best to remove the swastika spray painted to her garage.  She says she has a pretty good idea of why her home was targeted.

"My husband is white, and I'm Hispanic. The first thing we thought about was racists," she said.

Police are investigating all angles.

"There's always the thought, is this kids? It could be adults, who knows?" said Virgil Willoughby with Elizabethtown Police.

This crime is a bit personal.

"Kill Police" is a message that's not taken lightly, especially considering recent violence shown toward law enforcement in this country.

"The thing I would say about living in Elizabethtown is that we have great community support. There's one bad apple in every bunch," Willoughby said.

If they're caught, serious jail time and fines are on the line.

"You want a felony conviction over something that stupid? Are you kidding me? Willoughby said.

Meanwhile, the community will clean up and hope the vandal or vandals do not have plans of coming back.
