RAW VIDEO | Mitch McConnell sits down with WDRB at Republican National Convention

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WDRB) -- Senator Mitch McConnell will take the stage Tuesday at the Republican National Convention at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

WDRB's Lawrence Smith sat down with McConnell on Monday and asked him what his message will be.

"People feel American is on the wrong track," McConnell said. "If they believe our country is on the wrong track, whether it's fighting terrorism or creating jobs and opportunity, why would they want more of the same?

"I think that's the strongest argument (Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump) and (Indiana Gov. Mike Pence) can make and the strongest argument senate republicans can make."

McConnell has endorsed Trump but also been very critical of him.

"I'm feeling a lot better about this campaign for a couple of reasons," McConnell said. "Number one, I think he is following a script more often ... There's nothing wrong with that. Candidates for president frequently think through what they're going to say and stick to a script."

And McConnell believes the addition of Gov. Pence is reassuring.

"Mike was solid conservative when he was in Congress," he said. "He has had a good record as governor of Indiana. We know him. He's been in a lot of these battles that we've had over the years, and in my view, been on the right side of virtually every one of them.

"So it was a reassuring pick in my view and a smart move on Trump's part."

McConnell has been laser focused on keeping his senate majority. He believes Trump will neither help or hurt that effort.
