Louisville police hope partnership with Nextdoor app will increase neighborhood safety

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro is partnering with the Nextdoor app.

The app allows users to connect with neighbors and talk about what's going on in their neighborhood. All of Louisville Metro Government, including the Mayor's Office, fire departments, and LMPD will be using Nextdoor.

Louisville Metro Police have been using Nextdoor since April to convey targeted information to residents of hundreds of neighborhoods that have signed up for the free service. For example, after a series of car break-ins in the Highlands, LMPD was able to use Nextdoor to advise of an arrest with a message just to residents signed up in that neighborhood.

Now, all of Louisville Metro Government, including the Mayor’s Office, Department of Public Works, the Fire Department and LMPD will use Nextdoor to build stronger, safer communities, working with neighbors to increase safety and strengthen a virtual neighborhood watch.

Staff members will be able to send residents direct messages about important, and often critical updates happening in their neighborhoods.

LMPD says do not use the app for emergencies, police services or to report criminal activity.

Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website; all members must verify they live within the neighborhood before joining. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines. Police and city officials cannot access residents’ contact information or content, but can share targeted messages.

LMPD Deputy Chief Col. Mike Sullivan says police need all the help they can get.

"We need help," Sullivan said. "There's 1,200 sworn officers of the Metro Police department. We can't do it all. We need the voices, the eyes and ears of the citizens out there to share the information with us."
