Kentucky senator delivers emotional speech on RNC stage

CLEVELAND (WDRB) -- We've seen national leaders, celebrities and Donald Trump's family members on stage so far at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

But Wednesday night, it was a first-term Kentucky state senator's turn.

"It's surreal," Sen. Ralph Alvarado said. "Kind of a dream."

It's a dream come true for Sen. Alvarado. He came to the notice of Trump's campaign after writing an email expressing what Hispanics really have in common with the Republican Party.

"(It was about) the values that we share within the Republican Party," Sen. Alvarado said. "And I think that might have circulated around a little bit and got in front of some people's faces."

Sen. Alvarado met Trump for about five minutes in early July and soon came word.

"They told me, 'we're gonna give you six minutes, 9:03 p.m. on Wednesday night,' and I was stunned," he said. "I don't think we've had anybody from Kentucky have an opportunity like that in ... it's probably been 40 years. No pressure or anything."

Alvarado spoke of immigrants, family values, and how the values of Latinos align with that of Republicans.

"At their core, Hispanics believe what Republicans believe: traditional family values, church, faith in God, the dignity of work, and the opportunity for self-sufficiency that comes from a free society and a limited government," he said.

Alvarado also told the story of how his family came legally to America and pursued the American Dream. He is now a successful physician as well as a state senator.

Trump was not Alvarado's first choice. He supported Rand Paul, then Marco Rubio. Now he's the face of Hispanic support for Trump.
