End of an era: Japanese company manufacturing VCRs to stop production

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The last VCR will roll off the assembly line this month.

Funai Electronic Corp, based in Japan, is the last known company in the world still making VCRs. It will stop production this month. The company says it's too hard to get the parts to make a VCR.

Only 750,000 VCRs were sold in 2015.

VCRs came out in 1975 and cost thousands of dollars. Prices dropped to $200 to $400 dollars in the 80s and became a staple in American homes by the 1990s.
