LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a Louisville man killed a woman then kept her body in his apartment for several days.

According to an arrest report, police were called Sunday to a home on Gerald Court to check on the welfare of 54-year-old Constance Thomas. When officers arrived, they found 48-year-old Jonathan Herndon inside with the victim's body. Police say she had been dead for several days.

According to police, Herndon tried to conceal the body by placing a garbage bag on her head and "covering her with a mound of clothing."

An autopsy determined that Thomas died from blunt force trauma. Police say Herndon killed her.

Friends of Constance Thomas called her Connie. They want a positive memory of her life to live on and said her contagious smile could light up a room.

"She was always out around the neighborhood talking to everyone," Kimberly Dougherty said.

Friends and neighbors last her on July 13. They said Herndon was an ex-boyfriend who was living with her.

"I was like I haven't seen her since Wednesday. And he was like 'Well I wouldn't know. I haven't seen her. She's mad at me.'" Dona Kerger said.

That conversation didn't sit right with Kerger. After smelling a strange odor coming from her friend's apartment, police were called to do a welfare check.

"And we found her, just not the outcome  that we wanted," Dougherty said.

On July 17, police found Thomas' decomposing body in her apartment on Gerald Court near Bardstown Road. Herndon was unconscious on the couch and found with a note.

"I think he had planned on, after he killed her, that he was going to take his own life. He was going to attempt to overdose himself," Lt. Todd Kessinger  with LMPD's Homicide Unit told WDRB News.

Fast forward to July 22 -- Herndon is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence.

"She said she was terrified of him and I said well lets get you out of there," Dougherty recalled. "She said she wanted to give him one more chance."

Thomas' friends say she was trying to help Herndon because he was sick, but that he ultimately took advantage of her  big heart.

"She was kind and beautiful and that she loved everything and everybody and she'd do anything for you," Kerger said. "I hope she's at peace."

The murder weapon has not been found.

The victim's dog was also found dead in the apartment.

Herndon is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections on a $100,000 cash bond.
