LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Neighbors on Chestnut Street say a current tenant in the Cloister Apartment building brings in interested renters, takes their money and disappears.

Ashley Twist looked for an apartment on Craigslist, found one he liked and contacted the woman who made the listing.

“I found one that seemed what I wanted,” Twist said.

Twist met the woman in person.

“I signed the lease with her. The lease seemed totally legitimate, and I paid her upfront,” Twist said.

He wrote a check for the first and last month's rent.

“In total, it comes out to $3,000,” Twist said.

She met with Twist to let him move in, but had yet to give him a key to the apartment. She reportedly told Twist her mother had died, and she would give him a key when she returned.

“I really don't know where she is, but she has since taken off,” Twist said.

It's now been more than a week, and his belongings are locked inside.

“I was just trying to be helpful and patient,” Twist said.

When things started feeling fishy, Twist looked up the property records. Nothing is in this woman's name.

“We contacted the property management group, and he said this same person had done this to two other people in the past week,” Twist said.

Until either the police or the property manager can get Twist back inside, he's doesn't have an apartment to call home.

WDRB News reached out to the woman, but has not yet heard a response.

Twist's employer is putting him up in a hotel until he can make other arrangements and get his stuff out of the apartment.
