'Do Ya Part' organization holds celebration of life event

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Young adults in west Louisville are saying enough is enough.

"I was shot 7 times, I'm still blessed to be here. So now I want to spread the word to kids so they won't go through what I went through," Robbie Jones, who spoke at the event, said.

The "Do Ya Part" organization held a celebration of life event at Cole's Place this afternoon.

The goal was to give hope, love, family values and respect to people who think no one cares.

The first honoree of the event was Ashley Swift.

In April, she was on her way to get married in Las Vegas when a drunk driver crashed into her shuttle bus.

She had to have her arm amputated, but isn't letting that stop her from giving back.

"We are just grateful for everybody who participated and gave and we hope this can become an every year thing," Ashley Swift said.

Proceeds from the event will help Swift with medical expenses.

Backpacks, school supplies, and uniforms were also handed out.
