Fire roars through two homes in the Highlands Sunday evening

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- 80 firefighters were dispatched to the Highlands Sunday evening as two homes went up in flames.

"And they just come down on both knees, take their hats off and spray themselves with water. It's unbelievable what they're going through," Lex Latkovski said.

Latkovski lives near Bassett and Ransdell Avenues and said he's never seen so many fire crews in his life.

He said the firefighters would rotate about every 15 minutes.

Captain Salvador Melendez says that's because of the extreme heat.

The fire that started in one home and spread to another was a three-alarm fire, not because of the size of the flames, but because of the personnel needed.

Melendez says crews were prepared because they started hydrating earlier in the week.

"It's something that we do throughout the summer in order for us to remain effective during this type of heat. So hydration is a big part of our preparation for days like today," Melendez said.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

A person inside the home was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
