Germantown prepares for Monday's 46th annual Dainty Contest
The object of the old-time street game, and the one qualification for people entering the contest.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The 46th annual Dainty Contest is happening Monday evening in Germantown.
Every year, hundreds line Goss Avenue near Hauck's Handy Store to watch the action.
Dainty is an old-time street game using a stick and a small peg that is tapered on the ends. Competitors give it a hit on the pavement, flip it into the air, and then smack it down the street. The one person who hits the Dainty the farthest, wins.
The winner gets a huge trophy and bragging rights for year. The person who hits the Dainty the shortest distance leaves with an Easter egg basket full of lemons.
Participants have to be 45-years-old. The action kicks off at 5:45 p.m. It happens rain or shine. Bring your own chair.
You can stick around for the Schnitzelburg Prime Dinner, which is a handmade bologna sandwich along with a bag of chips and a huge dill pickle for just $2. There's Cotton Candy for the kids, along with plenty of door prizes, T-shirts, and other goodies.
