CRAWFORD | Louisville picked third in ACC's Atlantic Division by league media
The University of Louisville football team has been picked to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Conference in a vote of league media.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- This is becoming a tradition.
The University of Louisville football team was picked to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Conference Atlantic Division in a vote of 191 league media members released Monday. Overall ACC favorite Clemson was chosen first, ahead of Florida State.
The Cardinals have their highest expectations since entering the league two years ago, and return more starters than any program in the league, but still face a formidable glass ceiling against the Tigers and Seminoles, who have compiled a 4-0 record against them in two seasons.
U of L quarterback Lamar Jackson said the Cardinals acknowledge those two programs as favorites, but have plenty of confidence.
"You have to give them respect because they've earned it," Jackson said. "They have great players. But we have a lot of experience back and feel like we're going to be better than last season. So we'll just play the games and believe we will have a chance."
If there was any surprise in the balloting it might've been in margin. Clemson was an overwhelming choice for ACC championship favorite, earning 144 votes to Florida State's 39. North Carolina, the favorite in the ACC's Coastal Division, earned seven votes as the No. 3 choice to win the league title. U of L earned one vote.
Clemson also had the ACC preseason player of the year in quarterback Deshaun Watson. Florida State running back Dalvin Cook was second in the balloting, followed by North Carolina running back Elijah Hood and a tie for fourth between Miami QB Brad Kaaya and Louisville's Jackson.
All-Conference team balloting will be released later Monday.
