LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- New light on a cold case murder puts a mother's boyfriend behind bars for the death of a one year old little girl.

Mauricio Martinez was the prime suspect back in Jan. 2008 when 21-month-old Christina Lopez died -- but police said they didn't have enough evidence to make an arrest until now.

"Technology evolved and we had new info that came about that helped to clarify certain points that we were looking at," explained Lt. Todd Kessinger of the Louisville Metro Police Department, Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened in a Beecher Terrace apartment. Martinez was dating the toddler's mother.

Court records said when Lopez arrived at Kosair Children's Hospital she was already in cardiac arrest. The autopsy revealed the little girl died of blunt force trauma.  "The victim suffered multiple injuries to her abdomen, along with bruising and rib fractures," said court records.

Jefferson County District Court Judge David Holten responded, "This is a sad, sad case," while entering a not guilty plea on Martinez's behalf.

LMPD picked up the suspect Monday in Indianapolis.

"He was in the custody of ICE when we picked him up," Kessinger said. "From what I understand, he was in the process of being deported."

They're now looking for the girl's mother, last known to live in Indianapolis. She's a co-defendant in the case, but has not yet been charged.

"All of these cases are heartbreaking, especially when you have a child involved, but every murder case is like that," Kessinger said. "Every murder case has a sad ending."

Martinez was arrested July 25 and charged with one count of murder. He is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections on a $500,000 cash bond.
