Popular Louisville park facing string of car break-ins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Parklands at Floyds Fork has seen a number of car break-ins over the past few weeks.

“Unfortunately, we've had a couple of bad eggs come into the park the last couple of weeks,” said park director Scott Martin.

Martin says there have been as many as nine car break-ins in the past two weeks. Detectives with Louisville Metro Police say the thieves are smashing the windows of cars they see with valuable items left out in the open.

“We're asking folks to be aware of their surroundings,” Martin said. “Don't bring your valuables to the park. Leave the Coach bag, leave grandparents jewelry at home.”

Park officials say most of the break-ins have occurred at Beckley Creek Park. As a result, LMPD has increased its patrols of the area and park rangers have done the same.

“The more folks we have in here watching and taking care of things, the less of this activity will be going on,” Martin said.

“I think if people aren't wandering too far from their cars, and they're locking them up, it shouldn't be a problem,” said frequent park visitor Segil Gatti. “And maybe taking their purses with them.”

While whomever is responsible has yet to be caught, park officials are confident they will be.

“LMPD has been incredible about patrolling the park,” Martin said. ”They're going to catch the people behind this. Of that, we have no doubt.”

The Parklands at Floyds Fork caters to around two million visitors every year. Martin’s hope is that the thieves are caught soon so as not to ruin the park for all those other visitors

“We have very few incidents like this happening at this park, so when it happens, it's unacceptable to us.”

If you have any information on the cases, you’re urged to call Louisville Metro Police.
