LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two-time Kentucky State Amateur Champion Patrick Newcomb is the leader after a day of low scoring at the 2016 Kentucky Open at the U of L Golf Club in Simpsonville.  Newcomb, who won the Amateur in 2011 and 2012 and is now a professional, posted a six-under 66 in the afternoon to lead seven others by two shots.

Former Kentucky Open champions Brandon Brown of Shelbyville and Ted Shulz of Louisville headline the group at four-under.  Others to join them after first-round 68's; Grover Justice of Lexington, Cody Martin of Ft. Mitchell and Amateurs Evan Cox of Ashland, Cooper Musselman of Louisville and Chase Korte of Kevil.

A pair of Assistant Pros are another shot back after three-under 69's.  John Bachman of Big Spring Country Club and Jeremy Martin of Greenbrier Golf and Country Club.

Thirteen groups came in for about an hour in the afternoon for a weather delay, but all groups were able to finish.

Forty-one players shot even par 72 or better.  Second round play begins on both nines at 8:00 am Wednesday.
