LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a man after his carjacking attempt nearly killed two small children.

According to an arrest report, police were called to the Kmart on Outer Loop, near New Cut Road, Tuesday at around 8:30 p.m. after authorities say 31-year-old Donald Hatchell robbed a man.

Police say that, during the course of the robbery, Hatchell tried to steal the victim's car -- but the man wasn't going to let Hatchell get away easily. According to the arrest report, the victim tried to stop Hatchell by grabbing onto him.

Hatchell continued to drive the victim's car, dragging the victim until he let go.

Police say Hatchell almost hit a 2-year-old child -- as well as another juvenile of unspecified age -- as he tried to escape. According to the arrest report, this placed the children, "in a situation that could have caused death or serious physical injury."

Hatchell was arrested less than an hour later on Afterglow Drive, a few blocks away from the scene. He's charged with first degree robbery, and three counts of first degree wanton endangerment.

He is currently being held in Louisville Metro Corrections.
