Police searching for suspects after apparent smash-and-grab at J’Town gun store

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The SWAT situation at a gun shop off Hurstbourne Parkway early this morning is over, but the investigation into a possible burglary is underway.

Jeffersontown Police Chief Ken Hatmaker tells WDRB that a pickup truck rammed into the gun shop around 4:25 a.m. The entire SWAT team, Jeffersontown Police, and LMPD officers surrounded the gun shop for several hours after the crash.

Sgt. Lee Meredith with J’town police said the decision was made to call in the SWAT team for backup because guns were involved.

"With it being a gun shop, there's a higher risk of an armed individual being inside so we called on Metro SWAT to support us," Meredith said.

Several roads were shut down, including both directions of Hurstbourne Parkway at I-64, until the SWAT Team could clear the scene. Meredith tells WDRB that a robot was used to make sure no one was inside the gun shop.

He says he doesn't believe there's a credible threat to anyone in the area.

"We don’t have any credible information that there’s an active threat in this area," Meredith said. "We did have to secure and contain it just in case there was going to be any incident that put our citizens in harm’s way."

This isn't the first time someone has driven a vehicle into 111 Gun. Shop. In April of 2011, thieves drove a car through the same gun shop. Two brothers were eventually arrested for crashing a stolen vehicle into the store. They had buried guns stolen from the shop in a ravine in Iroquois Park.

Louisville Metro Police are still looking for the person who drove a stolen corvette into Tilford's Discount Guns on Fern Valley Road on Wednesday.  No one was injured, but several guns were stolen.

At this point, we don't know if any guns were stolen today. No one was hurt, and at this time, no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call J'Town police.
